Another wonderful model from our Monday morning drawing group at the LGAA Shanley House. I painted this portrait later in my studio from drawings and photo I did that morning. He still dressed the way he did when he was younger. A working man, a cowboy for life.
I was with Terri, a painting buddy, and we were driving away from Pearl. With the storm behind us, it felt like we were out running it. I used a pallet knife to express the stormy sky and dark green landscape.
I have taken two one day intense workshops from James Spurlock ( http://jamesrspurlock.com/ ) on painting portraits. This is a study done in his second class. He is an excellent teacher; I learned so much. Now I want to do more portraits.
As a plein air artist, I love painting the landscape of both Texas and Alaska. I work mostly in oils, but also enjoy working in pastels, and sculpture. My contemporary abstract paintings are inspired by my plein air paintings as well as my reference photos.
